ShatKarmas or shad kriyas, are six cleansing processes that prepare the body for higher yogic practices such as pranayama and meditation. These practices clear the body channels and allow smooth pranic flow throughout the body. Yogic texts like Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita emphasize the significance of these cleansing practices. Neti Kriyas is one of them that specifically focuses on nasal cleansing, which involves the purification of nasal passages and sinus cavities.
Neti practice can offer immense benefits if practiced correctly. According to Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the right practice of Neti purifies the air sinuses, rejuvenates the brain, and improves eyesight. Moreover, it eases the flow of pranic energy.
Significance of nose and influence of breathing
The structure of the human nose is made to facilitate the process of respiration. It has ciliated epithelium tissues that filter the air and alter its temperature. It has two compartments of equal size and shape, separated by the septum. In the upper part, it connects the nasal sinuses with olfactory cells. Small canals join the air-filled spaces, or sinuses, to the nose. The membrane of the nasal cavity has so many nerves connecting to it, enabling it to detect and receive impulses. It is also the place where two tear ducts, two nostrils, two eustachian tubes, and the pharynx connect.
Breathing through one nostril at a time can influence your body and mind. Left nostril breathing activates the Ida nadi and calms the individual, while right nostril breathing activates the Pingala nadi and energizes. "Neti Kriya" helps clear these passages for better breathing and may even help control involuntary actions.
Different types of Neti Kriyas
There are two types of Neti Kriyas, Jala Neti and Sutra Neti.
Jala Neti
Jala Neti involves the use of salt water to cleanse the nasal passage. In this practice, water is poured into the nostril using a particular kind of pot with a spout. This practice is extremely beneficial. It helps with headaches, migraines, sinusitis, and eye and ear problems. It enhances memory and concentration. Though immensely helpful, avoid it if you have pain in the ear or have a cold.
Sutra Neti
This practice employs a string of cotton to clean the nasal passage. Melted beeswax or a soft rubber catheter is used to dip the cotton before the cleansing process. Sutra Neti has a massaging effect and is recommended for individuals with respiratory issues.
Therapeutic effects
Enhances the functioning of sensory organs

Neti Kriya has also been beneficial for improving mental health conditions and enhancing cognitive abilities.
If you have little knowledge or have special health conditions, do not practice Neti Kriya. Also, make sure the equipment used in this practice is hygienic.
